BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care
Facilities
The Health and Social Care department is fully equipped with a variety of resources, including an expanding amount of software that is enhancing the teaching and learning experience of our students.
For each portfolio of work, students are required to supply an A4 folder in which to submit their work. In addition to this a Health and Social Care text book is available that fully supports all work covered during the two year course - these are available for use during lesson time, however, should your son/daughter require their own copy, they can purchase the book at a reduced cost from the school.
Enquiries about extra-curricular coursework sessions and additional support materials, including the aforementioned Health and Social Care text book, can be made directly to Mr Stubbs.
What is a BTEC First Diploma?
A BTEC First Diploma is a practical, work-related course. Students learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.
It introduces students to the employment area you have chosen and provides a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.
A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to FOUR GCSEs grades A*- C.
Structure
The course is made up of six units - two core units, which everyone takes, and a choice of four specialist units. The specialist units enable students to study particular areas in more depth.
Subjects Studied
All students take the two core units:
- Communication and Individual Rights within the Health and Social Care Sectors
- Individual Needs within the Health and Social Care Sectors
Plus the following four specialist units:
- Vocational Experience in a Health or Social Care Setting *
- Cultural Diversity in Health and Social Care
- Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
- Human Lifespan Development
* This unit includes 60 hours of mandatory work experience in a health or social care setting.
How is the course assessed?
All units are assessed and graded, and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.
What can I do at the end of the course?
With further training or study, students go careers such as nursing, social work and residential care management.
If you want to get a job straight away you could work and train in:
- Registered care homes
- Hospitals and primary care trusts
