PSHE and Citizenship
Preparing Young People for Adult Life (PAL)
Thistley Hough High School implements a Framework for PSHE at Key Stage 3 and 4. The Framework forms a comprehensive course in Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship.
The Framework is designed to:
- Provide essential knowledge, key skills and understanding and promote the aims and vision of Thistley Hough High School
- Complement the work done in other areas of the curriculum
- Benefit students, school and society
- Be accessible, inclusive and differentiated
- Be flexible and offer a basis for continuity and progression
By working together on school and community projects students have the chance to participate fully in the life of the school and community and to develop the skills needed to be an active citizen.
Aims of PSHE
- To provide opportunities for all young people to learn, achieve and develop self-confidence, self-worth and self-esteem
- To provide essential knowledge, skills and understanding relating to a young person's spiritual, moral, social and cultural development
- To prepare all young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life
- To develop skills relating to problem solving, critical analysis and conflict resolution to help young people make independent and informed decisions
- To encourage personal autonomy and self reliance
- To develop the ability to assimilate knowledge, to study independently and to have a positive attitude towards lifelong learning
- To introduce and develop an understanding of democratic processes and the implications of working together and sharing
- To help young people develop a personal philosophy of life which reflects spiritual and moral values
- To assist young people in understanding the significance of aesthetic and spiritual dimensions of experience
- To encourage young people to take responsibility for the choices and decisions related to their career development
- To promote responsible attitudes towards the maintenance of good health through an understanding of the factors contributing to healthy lifestyles
- To provide the opportunity for exploration of values and attitudes and the growth of skills necessary to build relationships, communicate and make decisions
- To encourage young people to develop self awareness and skills in social interaction while respecting the attitudes beliefs of others in a multi-cultural, multi-faith society
- To encourage a respect for the natural environment together with an appreciation of the natural world
- To enable young people to cope confidently with change and to actively seek involvement in the change process
- To provide opportunities for enrichment
Aims of Citizenship
- To give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding to play an effective role in society at local, national and international level.
- To help pupils become informed, thoughtful and responsible Citizens who are aware of their duties and rights
- To promote pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development making them more self-confident and responsible both in and beyond the classroom
- To encourage pupils to play a helpful part in the life of Thistley Hough High School, the neighbourhood, local communities and the wider world
- To teach pupils about the economy, the legal system and democratic institutions and values
- To encourage respect for different national, religious and ethnic identities
- To develop pupils' ability to reflect on issues and take part in discussions and make informed and responsible decisions.
Staff
Staff delivering the PAL course have been recruited from a variety of subjects including; English, Science, Physical Education, History, Religious Education and ICT, thus ensuring the expertise needed to deliver this imperative subject, and the ability to embrace the subject in a cross-curricular capacity.
