The department is very well equipped; all lessons are taught in dedicated science rooms. We provide revision guides for all pupils at key times in their school career, to ensure the best possible preparation for public examinations.

In line with the rapidly advancing quality of ICT provision throughout the school, all science rooms are equipped with digital projectors and connection to the internet. Two rooms have interactive whiteboards, and more will follow allowing us to further enrich the students' experience.

    Key Stage 3

Our Key Stage 3 students follow a modified version of a national 'scheme of work' published by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. Students are tracked carefully through the key stage and a range of strategies are used to help them to achieve their targets.

    Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 we have introduced an exciting new course: "21st Century Science". During Year 10 students work towards a GCSE which concentrates on preparing them for life in a society which is increasingly affected by scientific advances. Questions such as "Should I buy genetically modified food for my family?", "What do the newspapers mean when they talk about designer babies?" and "Is it safe for young children to use mobile phones" will be discussed. Hopefully our students will gain the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions on such matters.

science pictureFrom 2007 Year 11 students have a choice of two more science GCSEs. They can opt for Additional Science, which provides preparation for traditional A-levels in biology, chemistry and physics, or they can choose Applied Science, which allows students to see how science is used in real work-place situations. All students will be well advised as to which course best matches their aspirations.

Whether students envisage a future career in science or simply require the scientific literacy required for modern life, we aim to ensure that they have an exciting, challenging and rewarding time at Thistley Hough.
